Home Brewing
With the price of beer increasing with every budget, thrifty households are now looking seriously at brewing their own. This is not as daunting as it may seem and once you have the kit the actual cost is very little. Indeed it could work out as cheap as 15p a pint and you can’t argue with that. The increased interest in saving a few pennies from the monthly budget has meant that specialist providers are sprung up both on the High Street and the internet. So what should you be looking for if you want to “brew your own”? The cheapest way would be to buy a “kit” and they are available in Bitter, Mild, Stout and Lager although some manufacturers do include others such as Light or Brown Ale. The kit comes with basic instructions that you follow and can be as simple as adding the contents of the kit into a fermenter with the water, sugar and yeast and then allowing it to ferment at room temperature. Normally the beer would be ready to drink 21days from the start of the brewing but like a good wine it does improve with age so leaving it for a bit longer will do it no harm. Your average beer will have the alcoholic contents averaging 5%. Kits can be purchased from online sites or specialist shops along with the bottles and tops etc you will need. Although specialist bottles are not required remember to thoroughly sterilise any bottles that you will use to store the beer in.
